Welcome to Your birth Your baby!
I’m Rachel and I love everything to do with pregnancy, birth and babies. My own first childbirth experience was wonderful, even though I was completely under-informed, luck had it that I walked away feeling empowered, confident and in awe of what our bodies can do. Over the following few months, a few friends and family had their first babies too, and none of their experiences were as empowering. Most would be described as traumatic. This disparity started interest in the current culture around birth, and why so many women say they are traumatized by the experience that can be so empowering.
I’ve come to believe that during pregnancy families need to seek out independent education on the process of birth, the pros and cons of all the options available, instances where they are medically necessary vs when they’re just suggested, and so much more. The old cliche ‘knowledge is power’ definitely comes into play. Once we have mass independent childbirth education by pregnant families, I believe we will see a return of birth being seen as a wondering, empowering experience, no matter the form it takes.
My other passion is helping families adjust to their new normal once they bring baby home. Again, our current system of Maternal Child Health Nurse (MCHN) appointments for the baby, and one 6 week check-up for the mum is completely inadequate for the level of support a newborn family truly need. I go in-home and offer practical (cooking and cleaning) support as well as emotional and informational support to the new mother in particular and partner by extension. Bringing home a baby is tough. You’re recovering from birth, physically and perhaps emotionally, and having me there to think about dinner, snacks, laundry and kitchen cleanliness can be a huge weight lifted while you adjust to your new normal. Add on top of that seeing someone who cares, who will not judge, who will offer encouragement and evidence-based information when requested, and the help of a Postpartum Doula can be the difference between feeling completely overwhelmed, or feeling calm and confident (but still a bit tired!).
So, that’s how Your birth Your baby was created. I offer Lamaze Certified Childbirth Education (this has evolved from the breathing technique of the 70’s), Postpartum Doula services and mobile pregnancy and postpartum massage.
I’d love to hear from you about where you’re at in your pregnancy journey, so we can chat about how I can support you through the massive learning curve that is involved with becoming parents. Please see my Services page or contact me today.
